Steven Spielberg poses with his two Golden Globes of the evening (best director, best picture), in Beverly Hills, California, on January 10, 2023.

The Golden Globes made their big comeback on television on Tuesday, January 10, and notably rewarded director Steven Spielberg, present in the room alongside many Hollywood heavyweights, despite the scandals that have tarnished the image of these rewards.

The American filmmaker received the Golden Globe for best director for his very intimate The Fabelmans. In this feature film largely inspired by his childhood, he portrays a young American Jew who dreams of making films in the 1960s, while his parents watch their couple inexorably fall apart. On stage, the director explained that he had “never had the courage to face this story head-on”.

By his own admission, his personal story shines through in fragments in some of his films such as AND the alien Where Dating of the Third Kind. But the filmmaker waited until he was 75 to truly tell his childhood on screen. “No one really knows who we are until we’re brave enough to tell everyone”insisted Mr. Spielberg, whose parents are now missing.

The Banshees of Inisherin was crowned best musical or comedy. The feature film, whose action is located on an imaginary Irish island, tells the abrupt end of a friendship between two local pub regulars, played by Colin Farrell, crowned best actor in a comedy earlier in the evening, and Brendan Gleeson. Director Martin McDonagh also received the Best Screenplay award.

Still in the cinema categories, Cate Blanchett, as a ruthless orchestra conductor in Tarand Austin Butler, in remarkable Elvis Presley in Elvis, were rewarded with the interpretation prizes in the category of dramatic films. Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) received the award for Best Actress in a Comedy.

As for series, House of the Dragon received the statuette for best drama series and Abbott Elementary for Best Comedy. The award for best mini-series went to The White Lotus.

Long perceived as Hollywood’s favorite evening but now mired in scandals, the Golden Globes were on Tuesday to restore their image. African-American gay comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the ceremony, without fancy, but without a hitch, after the scandal of the slap in the face of Will Smith to Chris Rock at the last Oscars.

The most striking event was the surprise intervention by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who came to pay tribute to “those who have united in support of the free Ukrainian people in our common struggle for freedom and democracy, for the right to live, to love, to have children”.

Return to grace far from guaranteed

The presentation of these awards in Beverly Hills has traditionally been very well attended, as it kicks off the awards season in the United States. But last year, the Golden Globes were shut down and shunned by the industry amid accusations of racism, sexism and corruption aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which form their jury.

After a series of reforms to renovate the HFPA – which had no black members in 2021 – the American channel NBC agreed to broadcast the 80e ceremony. But the return to favor is far from guaranteed: the contract with NBC is only valid for this year.

In the face of controversy, the HFPA notably renewed the jury, including 103 new entrants – who are not full members of the association –, including many women and people from ethnic minorities. On Tuesday, the black community was largely in the spotlight during the ceremony, from presenter Jerrod Carmichael to the Cecil B. DeMille award given to Eddie Murphy for his entire career. Actresses Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) were also rewarded.

It is the influence of these awards that is at stake after recent controversies. In the past, a success at the Golden Globes was a valuable marketing tool, capable of launching a winning campaign towards the supreme prize of the Oscars. The movie posters also highlight the Golden Globe nominations again, unlike last year.
